Hiking Trails: Overnight and Backpacking

INGOGO

Situated on the 3 000 hectare DUNBLANE estate with pristine ecology in the Northern Drakensberg Mountains, 2 000 foot high escarpment face running through its centre. 13km of crystal clear streams, cascades and small waterfalls and views over Northern Natal. It is +- 3 hours drive from PTA and 2 and half from JHB.

Accommodation:
Base Camp: (Friday) Hikers will arrive and stay at the Grey Goose Farm Lodge in our "Academy" (dormitory) with 10 bunk beds and mattresses. Very adequate ablution facilities available (6 hot showers and 6 toilet facilities). The academy is situated in lovely gardens with a handy swimming pool and braai facilities. An a la carte restaurant is available for supper on the Friday night and / or breakfast Saturday morning.

Saturday morning: You now proceed to the Vulintaba (parking area at the starting point of the trail), where you will leave your cars, with 24 hour security and safety, on the property of the Dunblane Estate. This is good tarred road +- 20km from the lodge.

The 2nd night: Hikers will overnight at the Ingogo River Cottages which is situated next to the Ingogo River at the foot hills of the majestic Drankensberg mountains. There are 3 (pre-Anglo-Boer War), old sandstone cottages which are electrified, with hot running water and flush toilets. They have 2 dormitories with 10 beds and mattresses as well as an ablution, kitchen and open dining room cottage, with chairs, tables and cutlery.

Hiking (Day One): (12km : 5-6 hours) Steep sig sag 2km climb up Donkey's Pass. Then the Baboon's Pass up the escarpment with a rope and tyre section over a short cliff face. On top of the escarpment, hikers are 6 500 feet above sea level. The trail goes across the flat plateau with stunning views. The trail then gradually angle downwards to follow the Ingogo River, passing numerous rock pools, where you may relax and swim on your way to the overnight camp.

Hiking (Day Two): (12km : 4-5hours) The trail goes North in a valley, upwards, and then turn in an Easterly direction. Hikers will use a rope section to the top of the escarpment. At the escarpment edge once again you have unbelievable views. Hikers will go past natural waterfalls. Go down the "Trek pass" and onto the basin of the Dunblane amphitheatre, through the golf course area back to the site office.

Rates: **Minimum group booking of 4 persons.
Groups 1 - 9: R395.00 per Adult and R280.00 per child u/12 for the weekend.
Groups 10 20: R330.00 per adult and R260.00 per child per night.

Note: Johannes our guide is essential, although he need not accompany you all the way. In times of mist and heavy rain, his presence will be absolutely essential. He also is familiar with the area and all "short cuts" when necessary! He will also open up the Ingogo River Cottages for you, fill the water tank, boil the water and start the fires, as well as set out the tables, chairs, and clean up at R250.00 per group for the weekend.
