LANGBERG SPRINGS GUEST FARM  & HIKING TRAILS

Langberg Springs with its spectacular views over the Vrede farmlands and Witkoppen mountain range, is secluded in the Langberg Mountains overlooking its four trout dams in a deep kloof/ gorge. These trails are situated in the North Eastern Free State between Vrede and Memel.  Langberg Springs Guest Farm and Eco Trails is approximately 200km (2 Hours drive) from Gauteng in the Vrede Memel area.

Main special features on these trails are stunning views and out of the ordinary rock formations, gorges and small riverines. This is a high rainfall area which is rich in plant-, bird- and wildlife.

For the bird watchers there is the Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve, approximately 40 km from the Langberg trail. The natural wetland is world renown and a must for all nature lovers.

THE HORSE STABLES

(Accommodation for 4 to 13 persons).

  • This is a beautifully renovated old barn that offers a historical double story building dating from the early 1900’s. It can accommodate 11 persons.

  • On the lower level: There are two rooms with 1x double bed each and en suite bathroom.

  • Top level: Two rooms each with two single beds per room.

  • One room with a single bed and a bunk bed.

  • Separate shower and toilet on lower level.

  • ALL beds with LINEN. (Duvet sets and 1 x pillow) included.

  • Bring only your own towels.

  • The kitchen is equipped with all basic utensils. Electricity!!!
  • Fridge and deep freeze, gas braaiers.
  • 1 x two plate gas stove; 4 x medium pots; 1 x no 3 cast iron pot.
  • 1 x Electric kettle, cutlery and crockery for 11 persons.

  • There is an indoor fire place and social-bar area. 

  • Braai facilities in an enclosed boma area outside.

  • Ablutions/ Bathrooms: 4 x flush toilettes, 4 x showers, hand basins, toilet paper.

What Can You Do At Langberg? Our Activities Include

Hiking

  • There are 2 well marked, well designed/planned day circular trails to suit all levels of fitness – a must for all keen hikers and nature lovers.  This is a true outing for the whole family. It also offers enough challenges to be remembered. There will be enough time to appreciate the natural beauty and experience the tranquility that only the outdoors can bring.

Route 1

  • This trail takes you through two kloof/ravine areas where indigenous trees, shrubs and flowers thrive. It follows on the contours of the mountain but alternates from walking either below or on top of the massive sand stone krans ledges. You will also pass the waenhuis (coach house) a huge cave in the mountain which is renowned to have hidden Boer women and children for the duration of the Anglo Boer war, with all their furniture and belongings. Interesting lime stone rock formations are also to be seen on the trail. On a clear day you can see breathtaking views of the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho.

Route 2

  • The second day takes one past the waenhuis (coach house) – a huge cave in the mountain in which it is alleged that Boer women and children hid for the duration of the Anglo Boer war with all their furniture and belongings.  Continuing a little further, one reaches a cave to enthral all cavers – it is a maze of different routes and legend has it that it goes right through the Langberg!

Rock climbing

  • For the dare devil we offer rock climbing. Rock climbers and abseilers will have the time of their lives with 38 routes all equipped with bolts where they can test their skill against the rocks, with a difficulty grading between 14 and 29The routes are bolted and you can come test your skills against the rocks with a difficulty grading between 14 and 29.   Please supply your own ropes.

Mountain biking routes:

  • A circular route will take you around the Langberg to Vrede and back. The route will take you through the most beautiful scenery. The section to the top of the Langberg is definitely 4×4 and mountain biking terrain and not for the unfit biker.  There is also an additional 50km around Langberg to Vrede and back and is laid out mainly on farm tracks.

Fishing:

  • Trout, bass and yellow fish can be baited in the dams on a catch and release basis.  Bring all your own equipment.

Horse riding: 

  • This also available on request. Only for experienced riders. For a real farm style, peaceful and most enjoyable break away, come and spoil your self  at langberg springs.
