Tranquilitas Adventure Farm is situated on the hilltops of Waterval Boven, overlooking the Elands Valley and Waterval Onder in Mpumalanga, South Africa. GPS: 25°40’38.29″ S 30°21’48.56″ E

ACCOMMODATION:

  • CHALETS:

  • • Our chalets can accommodate a maximum of four guests.

    • An open-plan kitchen & lounge area opens up onto a covered patio, each with a braai and outdoor furniture.

    • The four self-catering chalets are situated around a large fire pit, so perfect for groups or families to braai and socialize together.

    • Tranquilitas is pet friendly and we welcome you and your dogs.

    This camp can accommodate 20-33 persons – ideal for large groups (minimum 25 persons)

    • A bedroom with a queen-sized bed, Two single beds in the dual-purpose lounge area

FARMHOUSE:

  • • The farmhouse is about 2 km away from the main campsite on the hill overlooking Tranquilitas.

    • It can sleep up to 12 persons.

    • The Farmhouse consists of 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms.

    • Plus two detached double bedrooms, a family room and an outside shower & toilet.

    • The house has a lounge and large dining-room with a fully equipped kitchen and outside braai pit.

    • The kitchen has a gas stove, oven, microwave, kettle, coffee machine, fridge freezer and dishwasher. Cutlery and Crockery for 12 persons.

    • Large lawn with shady trees and a view overlooking the valley.

    • Daily housekeeping is included.

  • RATES: The Farmhouse rate is R3600.00 per night for six guests. R550.00 per additional guest (up to 12 total). High season rates apply R3600 pn

CAMPING:

  • • Our camping area is situated around a large pool with several shady trees.

    • The ablution block, close by, has hot showers, toilets and basins.

    • There are several fire pits and an undercover braai facility and

    • there is a communal kitchen and fridge in the hall.

    • Camper vans or roof-top tent trailers can park on the western side of the camping area.

    • There are a few electrical plug points for all campers to share. (Please note these are not caravan plug points) They are ideal for charging devices and boiling kettles, not running generators or fridges.

    • There is a pool for use by both chalet guests and campers.

HIKING TRAILS & TRAIL RUNNING

  • • Tranquilitas has a variety of trails to run which range from beginner-level to advanced

    • The trail distances vary from 3 km to 38 km and from 1 hour to 6 hours.

  • Secret Forest – (Blue Arrows) 7km

    • Very popular beginner trail. Start at the Trail Entrance of Tranquilitas Farm, snake up the path following the blue arrows.

    • Follow the single track through the Forest and out onto the escarpment with good viewpoints.

    • This takes you on a downhill through the forest, past some rusted old car wrecks and down through the grassland, back to farm gate.

  • Rooibaard -(Red Arrows) 12.5km

    • Start this trail at the Trail entrance, follow the red arrows into the forest. Follow red arrows up a good forest climb, passing the Boer War graves and through the gap in the old stone wall.

    • As you exit the next forest you cross a cattle bridge and follow single track through the grassland with some amazing views of the Elands valley.

    • Then up to the top of the koppie with a 360degree view of the countryside. Back in the forest heading towards the farm gate

  • Trail X – (Orange Arrows) 2,5km one way – 5 km return

    • Down the timber catwalk towards the waterfall, over the bridge and keeping right split onto the bike trail for some more bridge crossings and great views of the indigenous forest and streams.

    • Take the trail back in reverse or take the steep jeep track to the top of the ridge.

  • The Gink – (Pink arrows) 18km – 349m elevation

    • Easy (most popular route)

    • Start as per the Secret Forest and follow the pink arrows, this route will take you into the Sappi forest with some amazing views of the hidden valley above Waterval Boven.

    • Combination of Jeep track and downhill sections through the newly planted forest.

  • Mountain Traverse aka Geelslang- (Yellow arrows) 42 km – 986m elevation

    • Moderate/difficult/strenuous

    • This is the longest and most strenuous route in the Tranquilitas trail network. But definitely well worth the effort.

    • This trail takes you to the highest point on the opposite ridge, with spectacular views.

    • An exciting run on the ridge through a long singletrack section of grassland and then a heart stopping 5km drop to the river crossing. A 7km uphill back to the campsite * will be rewarded with a coffee or cold drink at the reception hut. * Turn left off the dirt road, just after the municipal dump.

    This will take you onto the Rim trail. (Much better than the dirt road)

MOUNTAIN BIKING

  • • Tranquilitas Mountain Biking trails offer what few trail centers have.

    • 80km of single-track at an altitude of 1600m to 2000m above sea level.

    • Not many trail centers have 4-5km of downhill flow-runs,

    • Tranquilitas has 4 such lines where not a single pedal-stroke is required to descend the entire run.

    • These trails cater for all skill levels and can be ridden with most bikes.

    • Shuttle services are offered to groups on request.

  • All riders must have permits. Riding permits are available from Tranquilitas Farm Coffee shop.

    Due to the altitude riding is possible year-round, but conditions can change dramatically. In summer and spring be prepared for rain and thunderstorms in the late afternoons, whilst winter has more stable weather albeit cooler in the mornings.

  • The Candy store – Fireball, Gobstopper & Gumdrop –

    • (Purple Arrows) 3,8km to 4,5km

    • Moderate/difficult/strenuous

    • These 3 runs measuring from 3,8km to 4,5km with elevation drops of over 9.5%. They all start quite close to each other and although they go off in different directions all finish together at the pick-up point.

  • Long Drop – (Red Arrows) 12.5km 750m Decent

    • Intermediate/Technical

  • Tranquilitas Rim – (Red Arrows) 8 km return

    Intermediate/Advanced

    At the entrance to the main gate of Tranquilitas farm (opposite old farmhouse & climbers parking) The trail starts and follows the cliff edge for 5km and exits onto the road above the rubbish dump. Can be ridden both ways

ROCK CLIMBING:

  • • Tranquilitas is one of South Africa’s premier spots for sport climbing. The campsite is a stone’s throw away from the crags so no long walks are needed.

    • The Waterval Boven area has over 600 excellent quality sport bolting routes on hard sandstone. Access to the crags are a few minutes’ walk. There is signage that will lead you from Tranquilitas camp to the different crags.

    • Unlike many other climbing destinations, the mostly ideal weather conditions make for enjoyable rock climbing all year round.

    • As Tranquilitas is at 1700m above sea level, it rarely gets too hot. An added bonus is that most of the crags are in the shade by midday as they are east and south-east facing.
