Stamvrug Hiking Trails

The Stamvrug Hiking Trails are situated in the Bateleur Nature Reserve, which caters for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts like hikers, mountain bikers, stargazers, birders, butterfly and tree lovers.  It is only 26 km from Warmbaths (Bela Bela); 25 km from Nylstroom (Modimole) and only 120 km from Gauteng. +- Hour and half from Pretoria.

ACCOMMODATION FOR OUR HIKERS:

The Kloof Camp

  • 24 beds/ bunk beds &mattresses (3 rooms x 8 beds)
  • Full en suite bathrooms with donkey geysers & 2 outside showers
  • Pots/pans, 3 legged potjies and a 2 plate gas burner – bring your own cutlery and crockery
  • Braai areas: Braai facilities and wood is for sale @ R30.00 per bag from the care taker.
  • NB: Note – there is NO fridge: bring your own cooler boxes and ice packs.
  • NB: Note – there is NO ELECTRICITY – bring your own portable gas lamps/ flash lights etc..
  • RATES: R250 pppn All Ages

The Stamvrug Camp:

  • 24 beds/mattresses (3 rooms x 8 beds)
  • 2 showers, 2 flushing toilets and 2 Pit latrines, 1 basin
  • Pots/pans, three- legged iron cooking pots and a 2 plate gas burner – bring your own cutlery and crockery.
  • Open braai areas and first round wood provided
  • NB: NO ELECTRICITY – bring your own gas lamps
  • NB: There is NO fridge, plan accordingly and bring your own cooler box and ice packs.
  • RATES: R250 pppn All Ages

  • The Farmhouse:

  • Sleeps 10-12 people

  • 3 Separate bedrooms with bunk beds and mattresses

  • Kitchenette with pot, pan, kettle

  • Electricity

  • Dining & social area

  • Outside braai area

HIKING TRAILS

  • Bateleur is well-known for its GREEN FLAG accredited Stamvrug Hiking Trails, consisting of a network of about 10 different routes, ranging from about 4 km to about 12 km with various grades of difficulty, caters for hikers with different levels of fitness and experience.
  • Come and explore and discover clear rock pools, unspoiled plains covered in wildlife, deep ravines, and rugged hills with magnificent views.
  • The routes wind through a wide variety of landscapes ranging from grassy plains, ravines, hills, streams and woods to plateaus with stunning views.
  • There are two base camps, namely Kloof, which is situated at the edge of a ravine, and Stamvrug, set in the fold of a hill leading up to the upper plateau.

Day-trails from each of the overnight “Base camps”:  Stamvrug and Kloof Camp.

  • Hikers can link all these trails to make up their own distances for each day by using the following trails: – Refer to our trail map.

  • Zebra trail: 6 km; Escarpment day trail: 6.4 km; Moepel day trail: 8.4 km;

  • Porcupine day trail: 7.2 km; Game day trail: 4.1 km;Bush pig trail: 6.8 km
  • Quagga trail: 6 km and the Sunset trail: 11.3 km; Kloof trail: 11.6km

The 2-day Backpacking trail:

  • Kloof base camp to Stamvrug base camp via Kloof trail: 13km and the Leopard trail: 11.8km back to Kloof Camp.
  • Experienced hikers can again combine any links to make up more distance for each day.
  • Our trails are clearly marked and will suite all average fit hikers.
  • The Sunset trail must be regarded as a bit more difficult and strenuous.

MOUNTAIN BIKING:

  • Free of charge with accommodation.
  • Bring own bikes.

  • There is a network of clearly marked trails that will test all levels of mountain bikers.

  • Trail map available on request/ with your bookings.

  • Game viewing only on foot, no game drives with own vehicles allowed.
  • Our wildlife ranges from giraffe, zebra, eland, blue wildebeest, sable antelope and bless-buck, to smaller game like warthogs, jackal, bush pigs, birds and insects,
  • ​Excellent bird watching.
  • Swimming in natural rock pools.
  • Parts of the hiking trails are also suitable for beginners and the not so fit hikers.
