Sable Ranch is situated just off the R96 close to Hekpoort in the Magaliesburg mountain region. Being only 13 km from Magaliesburg, 4 km from Hekpoort, 50 min from Pretoria and 70km away from Johannesburg, it is the ideal breakaway for families and hikers.
There are several species of game to view including Sable, Blesbok, Wildebeest, Springbok, Impala, as well as dassies, duikers, baboons and bush pigs. 150 types of birds are said to be found in the area, as well as 650 different plant species. A lovely setting for a family outing.

This trail is open on weekends and public holidays, and showcases the countryside just outside Hekpoort, which lies on the slopes of the breath-taking Magaliesberg Mountains. The trail can be enjoyed at a slower pace, which makes it perfect for families with little ones or those that don’t do tons of walking. But, pick up the pace and push your limits if you are after a worthwhile workout.

HIKING TRAILS

There are a number of trail options, depending on the time you have available and your fitness level.

The longest (and steepest) option is 8 km, but you could also opt to explore a shorter, easier one of 4 km.

However, the longer route leads to a scenic picnic spot, which makes the extra effort well worth it.

  • Sable Ranch has barbecue facilities on the mountain too; the perfect place to rest and drink in the fresh air and gorgeous landscapes of South Africa.
  • From the top, you can choose to go down to the dam, which is surrounded by verdant vegetation, or you can head down Sable Road to the feeding centre for many of the animals, which is always a highlight.
  • Children love the Sable Ranch experience because they get to burn energy, explore the outdoors and spot many different animals.
  • The first part of the trail is a beautiful stone paved road which then becomes a wide scraped trail of loose rock and sand.
  • The trail begins with a steady uphill, around 2.5km, which gives the calves a great workout. The rocks are pretty loose and slippery throughout the trail and one needs to keep an eye on your steps to avoid slipping and falling.
  • The trail evens out once you reach the plateau.
  • Here you are able to view the game feeding points and you will be enthralled by the amount of game you will be able to watch and photograph in close proximity – so beautiful and special!
  • There are hides you can watch the animals and birds from.
  • The picnic area is a beautiful shady spot with fresh, running mountain water to refill bottles, as well as a braai and seating area.
  • After stopping to rest you can take the Dam trail and then hike the Sable Road – a hefty incline up the hill.
  • The trail then wanders back down to the starting point.

This is an ideal venue for a small private group to enjoy and relax in nature in good luxury.
